Trail Overview

This trail is a well-maintained two-lane gravel track. The route winds through forested terrain, featuring a mix of gravel and sandy stretches, with gentle ascents and descents along the way. The forest canopy makes the drive scenic, but drivers should be cautious as the trail is also used by local traffic. Additionally, there are bicycle paths along portions of the route, so care is needed when sharing the trail with cyclists. Many residences are situated along the trail, particularly near the water. Walk-in access points to the water can be found, though parking in these areas is limited. While the trail passes through attractive forest and offers glimpses of the lake, it does not provide any formal or dispersed camping opportunities. There are no amenities such as trash disposal or water supply, and cell service may be unreliable in certain sections.

History

The Migizi Trail is a 19-mile paved loop in the Chippewa National Forest, circling Pike Bay near Cass Lake, Minnesota. The Ojibwe word “migizi” means “bald eagle,” and fittingly, the area boasts sightings of these majestic birds, along with herons and pelicans.
