Trail Overview
Swanson Trail is a 1.7-mile bidirectional trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located between Lumley Trail and Norconk Trail, this trail is easily accessible. Starting out, you'll begin on a gravel two-track off-road trail in a clearing of the forest. As you navigate down the trail, the surface will quickly transition to a dirt/sand mixture. There really isn't anything to note on this trail other than the views you get along the higher-up bluffs. The trees within the forest are spectacular. PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY, and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails! As you weave along the trail, you may come across some washouts on the outer sides of the trail, so just keep that in mind. These typically aren't bad, but something to be noted. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle with limited places to pass. The trail ends at Norconk Trail. This is not a difficult trail, but it contains a lot of beauty and gives access to other great recreation.
