Trail Overview
NFS 5316 is a classic and scenic Michigan two‑track that winds through the Manistee National Forest. Just off North 156th Avenue, it’s an easy trail to reach. The route begins as a sandy dirt track running along a pretty open part of the forest, bordered by an impressive line of trees. Early on, the path is fairly wide with minimal brush or tight trees—though that openness doesn’t last forever. Most of this trail is tight with overgrown vegetation, so know that ahead of time. You may experience some of those classic Michigan pinstripes along this trail. As with most Michigan trails, conditions shift with the weather. Rain can bring downed trees, washouts, and additional mud, so make sure you’re ready for anything. The trail wraps up in a narrow, overgrown stretch of forest. Most of this route is only wide enough for a single vehicle, with limited passing spots. It ends at a small turnaround loop. Aside from a few mud holes, the trail isn’t particularly difficult. No matter the season or conditions, it’s a beautiful, enjoyable route with plenty of scenery and fun along the way. And as always, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and respect both public lands and nearby private property so these trails remain open for future generations.
