Trail Overview
Mt. Curwood is now recognized as the highest point in MI. A survey was conducted in 2024 and published for peer review, finding that Mt. Arvon is 1978.81 feet high (about 6 inches shorter than the sign at the top says) and Mt Curwood is a little higher at 1979.25 feet, one foot higher than the previous survey and the elevation on the sign at the summit. This means that Mt. Curwood, which was formerly recognized as the highest point, and then dethroned by Mt. Arvon, is actually the highest. This route gets you to within 200 feet of the top of Michigan.
The route is 3 miles long and climbs 1,700 feet up to to 1979 feet. To access the starting point, you can approach from the west via the easy off-road vehicle Route, MA Lost Lake trail. Continue past the end of that trail into the section of FS 9908479 that is not yet mapped and has very recently been widened and graded for logging activity. The trail to Mt Curwood heads south off of FS 9908479.
The trail is easy to follow and in good condition. There are a few exposed rock slabs to drive up, adding to the fun. There are multiple large areas that were previously logged and are hosting young pine and maples as the forest regrows.
Difficulty
On a dry sunny day, this is a walk in the park. Mud and snow could make things more challenging. The bigger challenge is getting there if you come in from the south via the Huron Bay Peshekee Grade Trail.
