Trail Overview
Forest Road 9381 is a wide, flat dirt track in Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forest that offers an engaging challenge for intermediate off-roaders looking to test their vehicles in wet, muddy conditions. Stretching roughly 2.3 miles through dense forest terrain, this route features almost no elevation change, staying flat between 825 and 836 feet. However, the flat topography contributes to several low-lying areas that remain wet and saturated throughout most of the year. These low spots create multiple deceptive mud stretches that can easily catch drivers off guard, with some sections deep enough to pose a hydro-lock hazard for unprepared vehicles.
While bypasses exist around the most severe mud holes, they are not guaranteed escape routes, as even vehicles equipped with 33-inch tires can easily get stuck. Navigating this technical rating 5 trail safely typically requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, preferably running 35-inch mud-terrain tires, along with self-recovery gear like a winch. Given the persistent water and potential for deep mud year-round, traveling with a companion vehicle and having solid recovery points is highly recommended. The surrounding forest provides a scenic, closed-canopy backdrop to an adventurous and potentially messy route.
