Trail Overview
Cranberry Lake provides a quiet drive through the Grayling Forest Management Unit, making it a good choice for anyone seeking a relaxed ride away from busier routes. This narrow dirt two-track meanders beneath a canopy of pine and hardwood forest, with occasional openings that offer chances to spot deer, wild turkey, and other native wildlife. While the trail is primarily a single vehicle wide, a handful of wider sections allow opposing traffic to pass without difficulty. It can be driven in either direction, with one end reaching Kolka Creek Road.
The surface is mostly firm dirt but includes scattered pockets of loose sand that can become deeper during dry conditions, requiring attentive driving and steady vehicle control. There are no major technical obstacles, making the route suitable for stock high-clearance SUVs and 4x4 vehicles, though changing weather can affect trail conditions throughout the season. Cranberry Lake serves as a pleasant connector within Northern Michigan's expansive forest trail network, offering a peaceful ride through varied woodland while encouraging responsible recreation by staying on designated routes and following Tread Lightly principles.
