Trail Overview
5525 Forest Road is an inviting, scenic passage through the Huron-Manistee National Forest, making it an ideal choice for beginner offroaders and campers seeking a tranquil wilderness drive. Spanning approximately 1.9 miles, this highly accessible route connects West 11-Mile Road in the south to Forest Road 5311 in the north, bypassing the western edge of Nichols Lake. The terrain is flat with less than 15 feet of elevation change, featuring a smooth, sandy surface that is easily handled by any stock four-wheel-drive vehicle or SxS. While the road is moderately narrow, it presents no technical obstacles, allowing drivers to focus on the peaceful forest surroundings.
Offroaders planning to camp will find several dispersed campsites nestled along the route, though campers must note that dispersed camping is strictly limited to the west side of the trail. The surrounding woodland is particularly stunning during the autumn months when the changing fall foliage creates a colorful canopy overhead. While the sandy track remains dry and straightforward under normal conditions, wet weather can cause the surface to become slightly slick, requiring a bit more caution but no specialized recovery gear. Given its close proximity to the recreational hubs of Nichols Lake and Walkup Lake, this short route serves as a perfect connector or a quick, scenic detour during a larger Michigan trail ride.
Difficulty
Easy forest road, few, if any, obstacles and easily passable with any 4wd vehicle, no water crossings, may get a little more slippery when wet.
Access Description
Dispersed camping is permitted along the route, but strictly on the west side of the trail. There are no fees or permits required to drive this forest road, though visitors must follow standard U.S. Forest Service regulations for the Huron-Manistee National Forests.
