Trail Overview

This is a trail full of interest and is the first off-road trail along the Kentucky Adventure Trail Main 2 section heading south. This trail has a hiking trail pull-off, some rocky off-camber areas, and some deep puddles. The river crossing at the southern end can be a bit deep; a wide entry away from the rocks staged across the river is suggested. There's an open clearing at the top of the ridge that has been logged and some beautiful tight tunnels of hemlock trees.

Difficulty

There are some flexy spots that have an off-camber of more than 18 inches. Also, the river crossing can be a foot and a half deep or more, even a full week after rain.

Nice finisher ride after a scenic mother's day ride, the trail had a little mud but nothing major. It was a great way to finish the day.

From the river to the bypass is well maintained gravel road. From the bypass east is pretty decent trail, some fun small obstacles. Very little mud due to its been dry. We did the trail with no issues on 33’s and took the “hard” lines on the small obstacles.

Great trail beginning from the eastern side. It starts as just a gravel road until you pass a small cemetery and then it has a few simple obstacles. I would really only rate this area a 3 other than some deeper mud holes that could be worse if it hadn’t been so dry in the area lately. Nothing overly technical, but a nice taste of everything. It is quite overgrown, so scratches will definitely happen if you bring a full size vehicle through it. After you come to the intersection of Rockcastle from east to west, the road turns to a very maintained gravel road up until the river crossing at the end. Right now, due to the lack of rain, the crossing is a little more than ankle deep.

When crossing the river, go downstream approximately 40 yards or so. As a local who has traversed the river many times, crossing straight across is significantly deeper, which is fine for some rigs, others may struggle with the deep water. Go down, then across to the other bank, then ride the edge up to the exit road on the other side. Years ago I learned this the hard way.

River crossing at start was doable at the time, albeit the last 10 ft or so it was bumper deep as we dropped into a hole just before exiting the river and heading up the trail. The trail did not disappoint and had a bit of everything especially if you are more of a newbie with a stock rig that you don’t want to damage but a little experience doesn’t hurt.

trail started as gravel but switched to rocks/mud not far in. a couple slick rock sections on inclines but nothing crazy. make sure to stop at the overlook for a few pics, awesome view. fairly big mud holes but nothing crazy deep and the deepest one is near the overlook. river was up after the rain a day prior so i did the entire trail in reverse. halfway through the trail you can exit to the camp wildcat civil war battlefield if you dont want to run the trail in reverse

Fairly muddy since it was raining while on the trail. Rockcastle River crossing was easily maneuverable, even with some rigs with us on 33” tires.
