Trail Overview
Syracuse Sand Dunes Perimeter Run is an exciting 7.9-mile sandy loop designed for offroaders seeking to explore the outer boundary of Kansas's premier 1,300-acre OHV park. This trail is ideal for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, ATVs, and dirt bikes, presenting a fantastic tour of the park's unique dune topography. The route features a gentle elevation profile with a maximum elevation of 3,327 feet and minimal cumulative gain, making it highly accessible while still delivering plenty of sandy action. The sand along the perimeter is relatively hard-packed, but drivers must remain alert for shifting pockets of softer sand, especially along the western and southern boundaries of the park.
With a technical rating of 4, the perimeter run is suitable for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles with decent ground clearance, though airing down tires is highly recommended to maintain momentum and traction. Drivers without prior sand experience may find certain off-camber transitions and deeper sand sections challenging, so carrying recovery gear like traction boards and a tow strap is wise. The route begins near Highway 27 and Sam's Pond, which offers excellent lakeside camping, fishing, and a convenient staging area. Numerous interior trails and open play bowls branch off from the main perimeter, allowing riders to customize their route and test their vehicles on steeper dune climbs.

Syracuse Sand Dunes Park is managed by the City of Syracuse, Kansas, and requires an entrance fee or permit. Whip flags are mandatory on all off-road vehicles, including four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, ATVs, and dirt bikes, for safety and visibility across the dunes.
