Trail Overview

This trail runs over well-maintained gravel, though it turns muddy in spots. You'll encounter a few twists and turns and some local traffic, so keep your speed down. Once you leave the lakeshore, the drive opens out into gently rolling fields and stands of trees, offering a gentle and scenic drive. There aren't any marked or dispersed campsites, and you'll find no trash disposal or water facilities along the way. Cell service is spotty--check your onX app for coverage maps before you set out.

History

This route traces the historic heartland of the Flint Hills, a region that has remained largely untouched by modern agriculture due to its shallow, rocky soils--making it one of the last strongholds of North America's tallgrass prairie. The trail crosses land with deep cultural roots--from Native American hunting grounds to working cattle ranches. Expect long views over tallgrass prairie, passing ghost towns, century-old barns, and scenic byways that have carried generations of ranchers and travelers alike.
