Trail Overview
Wood Canyon - FS 561 offers scenic offroad riders and beginners an easy, ten-mile trek through the beautiful Salmon-Challis National Forest near Arco, Idaho. Running under the shadow of Howe Peak, Howe Peak Ridge, and Jumpoff Peak, this route begins by following the Hurst Canyon Trail and gaining approximately 1,745 feet of total elevation. The trail is highly accessible, though drivers must be mindful of potential erosion from spring runoff or lingering snowpack.
Because of the high-elevation terrain, snow frequently blocks portions of the trail well into late May, meaning those visiting before Memorial Day should prepare for snowy or muddy conditions. If attempting the route in early spring, the track may end prematurely due to deep drifts, but later in the season, the surrounding trail network opens up for extensive exploration throughout the 135,000-acre section of the national forest. Staging can be done directly in the town of Arco or at the start of the Arco Pass to Hurst Canyon track, which is accessed via Highway Drive from South Front Street.
Difficulty
Erosion from run-off is the only complicating factor on this trail, or snow that hasn't melted yet. Otherwise, it's an easy ride.
