Trail Overview
Waterhole Creek Trail (Trail 15) is an engaging off-road route in the Palouse Trail System of the Hoodoo Mountains, perfect for drivers of high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs seeking scenic ridge views and dense forest shade. Spanning approximately 4.8 miles, this trail links Gold Hill (Road 770) to Big Creek Road, climbing to a maximum elevation of 3,961 feet near Prospect Peak. The route transitions from deep timber to open ridge sections, offering excellent scenery and 70% shade coverage that keeps the trail cool during hot summer months. Starting from the Gold Hill trailhead, marked by a blue designation, travelers should note a large overhanging tree near the entrance that may limit passage for exceptionally tall vehicles.
With a technical rating of 3, the terrain consists of unpaved dirt and rock sections requiring careful wheel placement over exposed tree roots, rocky segments, and several tight hairpin turns. Drivers will encounter a series of climbs and descents featuring large water bars and a couple of steep incline sections with maximum vertical gradients reaching 17 degrees. The trail's overall elevation change features a descent of over 1,400 feet and a climb of 400 feet, making it a dynamic drive best suited for high-clearance four-wheel-drive rigs, SxSs, and dirt bikes. The northern end at Big Creek Road is marked with a metal US Forest Service sign, providing a clear endpoint for this moderately challenging Idaho mountain route.
