Trail Overview
This short but versatile trail offers plenty of opportunities to test your suspension or choose a more conservative line, depending on your build. The primary draw is the quick access to Kuna Cave, a unique subterranean cavern formed by an ancient lava tube. While the main track features extreme ruts reaching depths of 12 inches, the trail is wide enough to offer bypasses and shallower lines for those looking to avoid a high-centering risk. It’s a great spot for a quick technical shakedown or a unique geological detour just outside of town.
History
Kuna Cave is a fascinating geological feature located south of Kuna, Idaho, which originated as a subterranean lava tube formed by ancient volcanic activity in the Snake River Plain. Unlike many traditional caves, this one was created when the outer crust of a flowing lava stream hardened while the molten interior drained away, leaving behind a hollow basaltic tunnel. The cave is accessible via a metal ladder (which goes straight down for approximately 50 feet) descending into a cavern that stretches approximately a quarter-mile in length, offering a cool, lightless environment that stays around 55°F year-round.
