Trail Overview

This trail runs up to the cutoff to Coalmine, Hell Hole, and Big and Little Burns trailheads. It rides along Burns creek for a mile and a half anywhere up to 50 feet above the creek. It crosses the creek multiple times and is a fun ride up to one of the funnest trail systems in Southeastern Idaho.

Difficulty

The main reason this trail is difficult is because of the exposure. The trail itself is fairly easy with creek crossings and a high exposure slippery rock on one portion. Waypoints have been provided where obstacles exist with accompanying pictures.

Burns Creek, Hell Hole, and Coalmine Access This trail was very fun, but it’s not for the faint of heart. You should only ride this trail if you have the extra time to get technical. We started from the bottom, near the old ranger station. The first half of Hell Hole is not that technical at all. There was one rock climb shown that was fairly easy to get up and down, accompanied by a couple of creek crossings and some pretty mellow trails. Eventually, the trail forks — there is a bridge or trail “070.” If you continue up 070 (Hell Hole), it has a few more creek crossings, and then there is a final crossing that takes you up to another wall/stair climb. It’s about 12 feet up, with each “stair” spaced about 1.5 feet apart. It is tough but doable. After that, there are a couple more creek jumps, and then the final climb. It was around 190 yards long and pretty vertical. This was by far the hardest part of the trail — it’s covered in sand and was almost impossible to gain traction on
