Trail Overview

Walking Stick Road South is a dirt and rock path that is a moderately challenging trail located within the Chattahoochee National Forest in Northern Georgia, which I traveled going south from Big Creek Road in the Nantahala National Forest. This trail has 24-36 inch ledges and boulders riddled throughout the trail, and several places with washouts that are 36 inches deep that you either have to straddle or stay on the high side of to prevent falling into. This can lead to being off-camber by 24 degrees or more. I encountered mud along the way, but mostly shallow puddles, with most of the trail dry. There were a few trees that had fallen across the trail, but I was able to drive under them even though I have an RTT. Several more trees had fallen across the trail, but had been cleared. I would guess that this trail could be very difficult to travel during or soon after rain. The rocks on the trail are sandstone, which offer good grip, and the dirt is mostly sand-based. The trail is tight in places, so expect pinstriping.

Difficulty

This trail was ridden with a 2019 Jeep Rubicon with 2.5" lift and 37 inch tires with full armor so take that into consideration. I would expect some scraping andtighjt off camber areas to stay out of the deep washes and ruts. There are rocks and ledges to climb and drop off of that are 36 inches and possibly more.

First time on this trail and I was solo in a Tacoma on 35's and a 3.5" lift. Did it in just over an hour with stops for scouting and setting up the GoPro a couple times. It was fun and definitely had some sketchy sections that take some good wheel placement. Got up to 24° off-camber at one point. This was following a day of hard rain and still drizzly. The ground was soft and there was one time I got nervous it felt like it was going to give way as I narrowly scooting past a very deep trench. I was also getting brushed by overgrowth on the sides and roof for much of the trail, but it's all pretty flimsy stuff so I don't think it actually did anything. I also saw several trails off the main trail that looked like fun but aren't mapped and I didn't have time to explore. And at the NC end of the trail you can take a short 1-mile hike (both ways) to the beautiful Secret Falls. Well worth it. I'll definitely be back!

2016 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

Trail runs all the way to NC. Took about a hour and a half having to spot myself and drive. My jeep is a 2016 wrangler Sahara with 2.5” lift and 35” mud terrains that’s it. The trail has some very off camber sections, ruts, and rocky climbing sections. Maximum articulation is key, I was hanging a tire, and jamming my tires into my fenders on almost every section, locking diffs would have been very helpful as well.

We did this trail right after a down pour and it was a very fun but very technical trail. I am in a 17 tundra with 35s on a 3.5in lift and still had to stack rocks in some locations as I don’t have rock sliders yet. I would recommend high clearance and underbody protection, during the rain and wet conditions you will need 4lo in sections and can easily frame out on this trail if you’re not careful! Pinstripes are also on the list as trail gets very tight in areas! Overall extremely fun technical trail if you have the right vehicle for it! Also has a very cool waterfall at the north end with about a mile or so hike to it but worth the walk. Some pictures are of my buddies 23 bronco badlands on 35s and factory suspension!

Awesome trail right off the pavement. Deep washouts and a few small rock ledges. The road does continue to Big Creek Road right pass the bridge. A lifted 4x4 will get you through it with the right lines.

Bummed this trail got listed on here. It's been a quiet beautiful short trail for decades. I've been doing it in stock Land Rover Discovery 2, and LR3 on 32" AT's so mild but beautiful getaway on the way to the secret falls hike.
