Trail Overview

Lee Mountain Road (FS 181) is a fun mix of gravel and mud, with a few ruts and mud holes to keep things interesting! If your vehicle doesn't have decent ground clearance or 4x4, you might find some sections a bit tricky--especially after it rains, when the trail can get pretty slick. The trail starts next to a charming residential homestead and farm, so be sure to take it slow and wave if you see anyone around. This road is a popular spot for hunters, so keep your eyes peeled--you might catch a glimpse of deer or other wildlife along the way. The trail winds through some gorgeous switchbacks, but heads up: it's mostly one lane, with only a few pull-offs for passing. While there aren't any campsites on this trail, you'll find plenty of chances to soak in the scenic mountain views. Just be aware that the trail narrows quite a bit near the end, so you might run into some tight spots that could leave your vehicle with a little "pinstriping" (a.k.a. love marks from the brush). Turning around near the end can also be a bit tricky, so plan ahead for that. Before you head out, check the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest website to make sure the trail is open. Right now, it's listed as open from September 7 to January 2. Cell service is pretty spotty--AT&T users can expect 1-2 bars of 5G in some areas, but don't count on staying connected the whole way.

Difficulty

Lee Mountain Road earns a 2 technical rating because, while the trail is generally easy to navigate, there are a few sections that require attention. The road consists of gravel and mud, with occasional ruts and mud holes that can challenge vehicles with low ground clearance. After rainfall, the trail becomes slick, which can add to the difficulty, particularly for vehicles without 4x4 capability. The trail narrows significantly near the end, which may result in pinstriping from the brush and limited space for turning around. Drivers should exercise caution on the switchbacks, as the trail is mostly single-lane with few pull-off opportunities. Proper preparation and a vehicle with moderate off-road capability are recommended to fully enjoy the trail.
