Judges Camp

Judges Camp Road is a 0.8 -mile point-to-point dirt trail rated 3 out of 10 located within the Buck Island Tract of Townsend Wildlife Management Area in Long County, Georgia. While short, it leads to a scenic primitive campsite on the banks of the Altamaha River and features one notable technical obstacle near the end of the route. The trail begins as a sandy two-track winding through a canopy of live oaks, palmettos, and towering pines draped in Spanish moss. Most of the drive is flat and easy, though drivers should expect stretches of soft sand, low-hanging limbs, overgrown vegetation, and occasional storm debris. Near the end of the trail, drivers will encounter the primary obstacle where erosion along the Altamaha River has narrowed the roadway. This section requires careful tire placement and should be approached slowly, especially after periods of heavy rain or high river levels. The trail ends at Judges Camp, a primitive riverside campsite with direct access to the Altamaha River. The large hardwoods, quiet river views, and shaded camping area make it an excellent destination for camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, or simply enjoying one of the most scenic spots within the WMA. When the Altamaha River is high, portions of the road may flood or experience additional erosion, making the route temporarily impassable until water levels recede. Fallen trees and storm debris can also block portions of the trail after severe weather. A valid Georgia hunting license, fishing license, or Georgia Lands Pass is required to access the Wildlife Management Area. ATVs are not allowed. Visitors must remain on roads that are open to public vehicle travel and obey all posted gates and seasonal closures.
