Trail Overview

This trail begins at the jackknife section at 34.64547, -84.03388, where Blue Ridge transitions onto Horseshoe Ridge. This trail welcomes more intermediate technical off-roaders. While it offers a fun adventure, you will encounter deeper ruts along the narrow road, larger rocks, and potentially downed trees. Additionally, you can access the trail from Black Mountain Road at 34.6099, -84.0042 and enter from the southeast side. Be mindful that this entire section might experience seasonal closures, as there is a gate at both ends.

Difficulty

This trail is pretty narrow, it is just wide enough for one vehicle at a time. The ruts are quite noticeable, around 8-12 inches deep and 12-24 inches wide. Plus, there are overhanging trees along the way that might be an issue for taller vehicles, so some trimming might be necessary. You'll also encounter larger rocks scattered throughout, adding to the terrain and requiring some careful maneuvering.

Ruts are quite a bit deep now, but you can squeeze by with a Jeep or Bronco and straddle them. Worst part is the 2nd mud hole going north, first mud hole going south. I went to the left going north (right going south) and bottomed out. much deeper that it appeared. The center track seemed the best path.

First time on this one. It was a blast. I gave it a 5/10 just because if your not paying attention, you could get into a bad spot. Nothing too bad, but it’s probably. Deep ruts and rocky technical stuff. Good mud holes to play in. The only thing missing is a creek or river crossing. Went up the mountain which made it a little more technical but that’s why it was super fun. Plus it was raining so it was slippery and muddy.

Eastern end of the trail had a USFS sign saying the road was closed 0.8 miles ahead. It was not; there's a gate about a mile in, and it was open. Only other people on the trail were a group of dirt bike riders. 4/10 difficulty, mostly for clearance on some higher berms and the deeper ruts. The ruts are really just a 1-2 ft deep channel eroded out of the trail, but it wanders back and forth, requiring some line selection well in advance to prevent dropping a tire into it. Can be difficult to cross or straddle with poor line choice. Very rocky trail, but no ledges or boulders in the way. Couple of mudholes with no good bypasses, over axle depth on a dry day- if your diff breathers are on the diffs, this may be a problem. Plenty of height left in the holes to get tire-deep after rains.

Significant ruts. A couple of places would be a very tight squeeze for a full-size rig due to the boulders others have mentioned. Was no issue going down with my stock 1st gen Durango, but would be a real challenge going up if it had been raining.

Trail is awesome, I was able to do it in my jeep that does not have any lift on it. Plenty of clearance but came close in a few spots, just needed to take it slow and it was all good.

This is the bumpiest, rockiest road I think I’ve ever been on. Definitely need to air down for comfort. A few small mud holes and a few washed out ruts but nothing crazy. Overall, beautiful views and slow relaxing ride.

Trail was open. Had a couple of boulders that rolled down the hill in the middle of the road but plenty of room to drive around them. The trail had some ruts that had been deteriorating but nothing that a stock vehicle wouldn’t be able to drive on.
