Trail Overview
Hammond Gap - FSR 259, in the Conasauga District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, is a nice relaxing out-and-back ride that has much to offer. From the incredible campsites, gorgeous views, hiking access, as well as some spooky relics. The majority of the forest service road is a gravel road with some sharp switchbacks, occasional potholes, and small ruts. In September 2024, Venture Unknown Foundation performed a trail cleanup on this road as part of their Sweep Up The Southeast event generously sponsored by OnX as well as Polaris. Please report any dumpsites you find, with coordinates, directly to the Conasauga Ranger District.
Difficulty
This road is a pretty typical example of the forest service roads in the area. Mostly smooth gravel road with occasional potholes, some small mud puddles when wet, and small rutted sections on hills from erosion. The USFS lists this as a level 3, in terms of operator maintenance, suitable for passenger cars.
