Trail Overview

This scenic gravel road offers an easy drive, with a few bumpy sections, small potholes, an easy middle-rutted section, and potentially muddy areas after rain. Running along the ridge of the mountain provides occasional views on both sides, making it especially beautiful during the fall and winter months when the foliage clears. Entering from the east, you will drive through a small section of Ivy Log Gap FS 100, then stay to the right at the fork. This route features small ruts and eventually leads to a private gated property. The trail is primarily a tight, one-lane path with some narrow sections where overgrown vegetation limits visibility. In these areas, it can be challenging to determine whether pull-offs are safe or if they drop into gullies. However, a few wider spots along the trail are for passing or pulling over. Pinstriping is a possibility, most likely in the summer months. A single campsite is located off a short spur at a bend, accommodating a few vehicles. About halfway through the trail, a more challenging offshoot can be found on the right when traveling west to east. The trail sees little traffic and is open to highway-legal vehicles only. It operates seasonally from 3/15-1/16, with no permits or fees required. There are no bathrooms along the route. The town of Young Harris, with additional amenities, is roughly four miles east of the eastern trailhead on Highway 75.

We entered Gum Log from the Ivy Log Gap end, expecting the trail to be open all the way to Gum Log Road. The track was closed by a gate just after Burt Rogers Road near Frozen Gap, The trace was in decent condition with some mild to moderate wash outs, nothing that a high clearance vehicle can;t handle. I wouldn't take the family sedan up the track, but a small 2wd pickup would likely be safe.
