Trail Overview

Darnell Creek Trail takes you along the Darnell Creek. There are several hiking trails to breathtaking waterfalls along the river. The Darnell Shooting Range is 3 miles up the road. The trail is a gravel forestry road with some soft sand spots that can turn into mud holes after heavy rain and 2-3 feet high obstacles, potholes, and rifts. The road is narrow and not wide enough for two vehicles to pass. 4WD and High-Clearance are highly recommended, especially during Winter. All vehicles must be street-legal. The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest provides the finest outdoor recreation opportunities and natural resources in Georgia. Featuring nearly 867,000 acres across 26 counties, thousands of miles of clear-running streams and rivers, approximately 850 miles of recreation trails, and dozens of campgrounds, picnic areas, and other recreation activity opportunities, these lands are rich in natural scenery, history, and culture. The Chattachoochee-Oconee National Forest offers a variety of activities such as camping, OHV riding, boating and target shooting. While many of these activities are free, passes or permits may be required at certain recreation sites to help maintain, manage, and improve the facilities: https://www.fs.usda.gov/conf

A nice trail that is very easy for the first two thirds, but gets a bit more internesting not long after the shooting range. Then once you pass the only couple of established disperssed camping spots, it narrows a good bit and gets even more challenging. The first portion is a 1-2, past the shooting range it becomes like a 2-3, and a few spots past the campground I would rate 3-4. Not tough, but some of the bigger ruts need a little tire placement effort if you want to keep the suspension and undercarriage clean. All in all an easy, fun ride.

Fun Ride! Lower Falls & Upper Falls Are Peaceful. Stock 2026 Bronco Big Bend Went Up it Without a Struggle. The Shooting Range On Top of The Mountain Was Pretty Cool. Definitely Not a 6. 2 or 3

Went to this trail because it is a blue (6/10) rating but it is a 2/3 rating only because of the climb. Never even considered putting my gladiator in 4x4 and tracked with an average speed of 11mph.

Went after a few days of rain so the trail was slick at some spots. One small hill that needed 4wd but besides that an easy trail. Maybe a 3/10 difficulty if you don’t have decent clearance.

This might be a 2. Fun & engaging road but nothing challenging in my stock ‘16 4Runner. A few rocky spots but nothing I’d call a ledge. Narrow in places & often steep. Fun!

Seems this rd has been graded or fixed up the the shooting range. At most this is a 2 rating as there was a Toyota Corolla at range. Going past the range will result in lots of pinstripes as it is not used a lot. I didn’t proceed as wasn’t up for the pinstripes today. Last I recall a year ago it was maybe a 3.5

This is a 1/10 trail. Not sure how it got rated a 6/10. You can do most of it in a car and the rest in a 2WD crossover. Unless you're looking to for hiking trails, camping or shooting range, there is no reason to go down it since it goes no where.

It did not take long to do this trail as it is pretty basic. I have no idea how this is rated so high on here. It was a 2 for me, 3 at best toward the end of the trail. It was the first if 4 I did this day in Chattahoochee National Forest around the Clayton area. After this I went to Sarah’s Creek, Gold Mine Road, and Holden Cemetery Road. I’ve done all the higher rated trails in that area now including Popcorn Creek, Earls Ford, and Chestnut Ridge.
