Trail Overview
Thomaston Dam Loop is a moderate dual-sport style ride best suited for experienced dirt bike riders looking for a mix of flowing singletrack and faster gravel segments within a controlled OHV area. Located along the Naugatuck River corridor just north of Thomaston Dam, this motorcycle-only trail system managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers blends narrow wooded trail with a railbed return, creating a loop that offers both technical riding and more open throttle sections. The singletrack portions wind through dense forest with a natural dirt surface, where riders should expect tight turns, exposed roots, scattered rocks, and occasional elevation changes that demand consistent control and awareness. While the terrain is not extreme, the combination of trail features and limited visibility keeps the difficulty solidly in the moderate range.
The route typically runs several miles depending on turnaround points near Route 8, with the return leg following a compacted gravel railbed that contrasts sharply with the tighter trail sections and allows for increased speeds. All travel in the OHV area is one way; travel is northbound west of the main paved/gravel road, and southbound on the eastside (riverside) of the road. Sections closer to the river are prone to soft ground and flooding, and seasonal closures are common to protect trail conditions, making it essential to verify access through USACE before planning a ride. Only street-legal or off-road motorcycles are permitted, and enforcement is active, so riders should expect clearly defined boundaries and usage rules.
