Trail Overview
Williams Creek and Reservoir road (#640) is all about recreation; camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, biking, fishing and wakeless boating on the reservoir. This is an easy maintained gravel/dirt road suitable for any vehicle. Located in the San Juan National Forest at 8250 ft elevation, the Williams Reservoir is in a beautiful setting amongst the ponderosa pine, aspen and cedar with green meadows and wildflowers when in season. The drive there along Piedra road is just as scenic making for an ideal day trip from Pagosa Springs. No cellular service is available. The reservoir itself is stocked with Kokanee salmon and several species of trout including Colorado River Cutthroats. This along with fishing in the creek makes for an ideal fishing day trip. To stay longer, there are four USFS developed campgrounds, Williams Creek, Teal, Cimmarrona, and Palisades which is unique in that it's only available for horse campers with campsite corrals furnished. All the campgrounds have vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, potable water, and trash pick-up. The Williams Creek Trailhead (#587) is located next to the Palisades campground for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. OHV trails are close by for ATVs. The Poison Park road (#644) connects into Williams Creek road providing more recreational opportunities.
