Trail Overview
Ute Creek is a moderately challenging 6.1-mile multi-use trail on the Uncompahgre Plateau that offers offroaders an excellent mix of technical rock navigation and scenic forest cruising. Suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs, this point-to-point route can be driven in either direction, starting high in the scenic aspen glades around 8,888 feet or climbing up from the lower elevations. The upper section of the trail runs tight along the creek, demanding careful tire placement over loose rocks and moderate ledges that earn this route its technical rating of 5.
As the route descends roughly 1,555 feet down to 7,332 feet, the tight forested corridor opens up into flowy, sandy trails flanked by juniper and ponderosa pines. This lower half transitions to a much easier, faster-paced drive before connecting with Cow Creek and Uranium Road, where drivers can choose to loop back via nearby fire roads or run the trail as an out-and-back. Because this is a multi-use trail, offroaders should remain alert for mountain bikers and hikers sharing the dirt path. Access is straightforward by taking Highway 142 to Divide Road, then proceeding toward the Divide Campground area to locate parking and the trailhead.
