Trail Overview
Sawmill Road is a thrilling and highly scenic trail that snakes its way along a narrow mountainside path, offering spectacular views for those willing to tackle its tighter, more demanding terrain. The driving surface primarily consists of loose dirt mixed with small, shifting rocks measuring two to three inches in diameter. Almost immediately upon entering the trail, drivers are greeted with persistent 6–8-inch ruts that set a rugged tone for the journey. Because the trail is remarkably narrow, dense brush heavily encroaches on the path, making light to moderate pinstriping highly likely for standard vehicles. Furthermore, passing oncoming traffic is exceptionally difficult and will frequently require one driver to back up to a suitable pullout. The trail's difficulty ramps up significantly around the 0.9-mile mark, where the ruts deepen dramatically to 12–14 inches, demanding careful tire placement. In this same section, drivers will also encounter a large fallen tree that partially obstructs the path, though a viable bypass has been established to navigate around it safely. Ultimately, this demanding but incredibly rewarding route culminates at one of the region's premier dispersed camping areas. Beyond this final idyllic campsite, the road is definitively closed to all motorized travel, with large logs intentionally placed to block further progress.

Sawmill Rd presents a level 3 technical challenge primarily due to the severe rutting and exceptionally narrow trail width. The initial 6–8 inch ruts quickly escalate to deep 12–14 inch trenches near the 0.9-mile mark, strictly requiring a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle with substantial approach clearance (at least 12–14 inches) to prevent undercarriage and bumper damage. Additionally, the extremely tight corridors mean that dodging overhanging branches is virtually impossible, making pinstriping a near certainty for full-sized rigs. The absolute lack of passing room further complicates the drive, demanding heightened situational awareness and confident reversing skills on narrow, uneven terrain.
