Trail Overview

Rim Road is a rugged 23-mile off-road trail near Montrose, Colorado, connecting US Highway 50 to Divide Road in the Uncompahgre National Forest. Climbing from 5,529 feet to 7,973 feet, the trail serves as the primary gateway to the Dry Creek rock crawling area. The route consists of long, rough stretches of exposed bedrock and eroded ledges that make for a slow, bumpy drive. While mostly non-technical, a steep, loose hill situated between the southern exits of the Cactus trail features an undercut rock shelf at the summit that can challenge stock vehicles. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are highly recommended.

Difficulty

Several stretches of the main access road are extremely rough and slow where all soil has washed off and left only exposed ledge. The bad spots seem to go on forever. Not difficult, but very uncomfortable.The hill is steep and loose, and there is a slightly undercut shelf at the very top of the hill.

They had just done dust control at the beginning making it muddy and the south end had some washboards. Not a different trail in a full size rig but a small cross over might have trouble.

Going south, just past T0pless Trl - there is a closed section and you have to take a left (south) and stay to the right of the fork. Connects back up in about 1/4 mi.
