Trail Overview

This is a very scenic and very fun trail on dirt, slick rock and loose rock. The very fun part is an area of granite ledges/steps to climb or descend. You can pick your way through smaller steps, or find vertical steps over five feet. There are flatish areas between the steps that allow you to properly position your vehicle. Both the west and the east access points have about a 14%-15% average grade and are rocky, but are short climbs (both about 200 feet long with a 30 foot vertical). The west access point has more side-to-side room for Jeeps, while the east side would be rather tight for Jeeps, especially with sharp switchback turns near the base. The climbing steps are toward the east end of the trail. From the west access point, you have a rocky, rutted, forested and root-laden trail as you trend upward. Toward the top, you start to encounter slick rock and broken granite boulders. The view to the south is excellent with expansive views of Pikes Peak. As you turn to the north, the slick rock becomes more dominant and you are at the steps.

Difficulty

The climbs at the access points pose no significant challenge. The trail is very rocky, rutted, eroded and tree-prone most way. However, this earns it's rating for the unavoidable set of vertical drop steps/ledges from 18" to over five-feet high near the east end of the trail. During the spring snowmelt or summer monsoon, deep mud is also possible.

What fun that was! Stock 2023 Tundra CrewMax TRD. That long wheel-base-whew. Be prepared for stepped rock face with minimal 1 to 2ft drops, it get's more technical if you want it. I stacked a few rocks to protect my pretty truck, a couple gentle scraping on my rock sliders. Overall, so much fun!

Was able to do it as a beginner without issues, skipping the steps/ledges. There is a steep narrow detour around them. Fun trail!

We ran the trail from east to west. The bulk of the action is in the first 1/4 mile of the trail with the stair steps and switchback at the east end. Neither were that bad as I was able to take the harder lines with a little working in my Tundra with armor and 34’s just fine. As with most trails at Rainbow Falls, you can really make it as hard or as easy as you want with the right line choices. If you’re worried about the obstacles, try running the trail from west to east and there’s plenty of room to turn around if you decide the obstacles at the top (east) are a little too much, everything until then is basically a loose rock road that can be easily negotiated with some good line choices. There’s also plenty of good areas to stop and take in the view of Pike’s Peak as well.

Everything is open. The rock obstacle that is required it getting more chewed up. Don’t think stock could do it but with 33” and the right line it can be done

Fun trail going East to West (or North to South). The rock steps at the beginning were fun and plenty of options based on what your rig can handle. After that mostly loose rocks to maneuver and plenty of amazing scenery.

Dry and riding great! Started from the West heading East. I think next time I'll turn around after I get to the top. The down from there has a technical rock section (not too bad) and a steep switch back that I'm surprised I didn't roll on. 😮 Cleared everything though, so maybe just need to gain confidence offroading.
