Trail Overview

Porcupine Gulch ends at an old mine with both an upper and lower level. The lower has more room to turn around. Take time to explore and you can spend the biggest part of a day. Many people that come to the area stick to the main trails and miss the attractions of these lesser-used ones.

Nice quiet and very lightly used trail. Several tight switchbacks and a couple of steep stretches. Go all the way to the top of the lower section for an easy turnaround otherwise turning around short of that spot is very tricky due to narrow and steep track.

Trail sort of goes to nowhere but that’s the idea. Ends at the mine. The view is good though. The switchbacks would be difficult in something with a long wheel base. There are sections of ruts and baby head rocks. Switchbacks have some baby heads and shark fin rocks to content with.

this would be just a 3 except the switchbacks are quite tight and would be difficult in a long W/B

At the 2nd switchback the trail has a very deep snow drift still covering the road. I made an attempt 3 times to plow through it but it’s too deep and the snow is still covering the road and is too deep right now. Lots of runoff and slightly muddy. If it wasn’t for the snow drift still on the road it would be passable. Give it a month and it should be fully open.
