Trail Overview
This out-and-back trail features moderate elevation gain and travels through a remote area that remains conveniently close to town. The route winds through groves of aspens and old-growth pines, offering scenic forest views. Recently graded, it includes numerous water breaks that may cause undercarriage contact for vehicles with low breakover angles. While there are no major obstacles, drivers should expect a few small rock ledges along the way.
Difficulty
A few small rock ledges and minor water diversions are present along the route, requiring vehicles with high ground clearance. Overall, the trail offers moderate terrain suitable for most off-road capable vehicles.
History
The pass was named for the musical sounds made as the wind blows through the peaks and valleys. Zebulon Pike (Pikes Peak namesake) and his U.S. Army expedition crossed this pass during the winter of 1806-07 on their journey southwest to explore the boundary with New Spain.
