This scenic 12.6-mile point-to-point route offers four-wheel-drive enthusiasts, SxSs, and high-clearance vehicles an adventurous alternative climb to the pristine waters of Meadow Creek Reservoir. Starting along the heavily eroded Hurd Creek Road, the climb demands careful tire placement over bumpy terrain and obstacles, including loose rock up to 12 inches in size. As the trail winds upward, climbing from a minimum elevation of 8,821 feet to a maximum of 10,524 feet, it treats travelers to sweeping views of the surrounding valley before merging with the more maintained County Road 84. This upper section bypasses the rougher starts, but still delivers an engaging mountain drive with a cumulative elevation gain of 2,365 feet. Meadow Creek Reservoir serves as a vibrant high-country hub, offering excellent opportunities for fishing, paddleboarding, camping, and hiking. The route provides direct access to both the High Lonesome Trailhead and the Junco Lake Trailhead, which serve as gateways to several spectacular hiking trails crossing over the Continental Divide. While the primary, rougher start along Hurd Creek Road can be challenging for low-clearance vehicles, standard four-wheel-drive vehicles with aired-down tires will easily handle the climb. Due to afternoon mountain showers, it is highly recommended to make the trip in the morning to secure a prime spot along the water and enjoy the scenic views before the clouds roll in.
