Trail Overview

McManus Road (Forest Road 633) is an easy, highly scenic drive near Pagosa Springs, Colorado, ideal for beginners, families, and riders of all vehicle types looking to experience the area's stunning natural landscapes. Stretching approximately 6.6 miles through the San Juan National Forest, this route connects Piedra Road to the west with Plumtaw Road to the east, making it a key segment of the popular Four Mile, Plumtaw, Piedra loop. Along the way, travelers are treated to a rolling landscape of lush green meadows, towering Ponderosa pines, and historic pastoral ranchlands. With elevations ranging from 7,800 to 8,240 feet, the trail is relatively flat, experiencing a modest cumulative elevation gain of around 255 feet and a gradual net descent when traveling east. Classified with a technical rating of 2, the route consists of a graded gravel surface that is easily traversable by standard four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes. While the trail is generally smooth, drivers should remain alert for occasional potholes and watch for slick conditions that can develop quickly during or after heavy rainfall. Camping opportunities are highly limited along this stretch, with only a single disturbed primitive campsite available, meaning visitors should plan to camp elsewhere in the surrounding national forest. Accessible primarily from late spring through fall depending on winter snowpack, this trail offers an exceptional, low-stress dirt touring experience with majestic mountain backdrops.
