Trail Overview
Black Mountain Road is an offroad trail that is used quite often in the summertime because the Pagosa Peak Trailhead is off this trail. The Pagosa Peak Trailhead is used to hike to the top of Pagosa Peak, which is 12,625 feet. From the start of Black Mountain Road, if you drive 3.8 miles, you will arrive at the trailhead to Pagosa Peak, which will be on your left. It is a popular trail because of this. You will see people hiking, riding bikes, or driving offroad vehicles on this trail as they make their way to the Pagosa Peak trailhead, so please use caution. The trail starts as a dirt road with some rocky areas as well as off-camber, washed-out areas. There are several water crossings, so if you are riding in the spring, please use caution. It then transitions to all rock until you arrive at the Pagosa Peak trailhead. Once you get past the Pagosa Peak trailhead, if you continue, you find a much deeper water crossing that is usually over 12 inches deep, even in the summertime. There are also several rock gardens with medium-sized boulders.
