Trail Overview

Love Mesa Road is a sweeping, 20.1-mile high-elevation adventure that immediately demands your attention with a steep, aggressive initial climb right off the trailhead. As the path quickly gains altitude, it breaks open to reveal some of the absolute best scenery in the entire region, treating drivers to breathtaking, near 360-degree panoramic mountain vistas under a brilliant sky. The trail carves deeply through a stunning, dense aspen forest, creating a beautifully shaded, highly immersive driving corridor. Because of this high elevation and heavy tree canopy, explorers will frequently encounter deep, lingering snow banks and icy patches well into the warmer spring months. Around the 1.7-mile mark, visitors will discover several incredibly private, well-shaded dispersed campsites tucked beneath the aspens, complete with rustic stone fire rings and excellent wilderness views. After navigating the early 6-to-8-inch mud ruts and slushy sections, the middle segment briefly rewards travelers with smoother, more relaxed Level 2 to Level 3 dirt-road cruising. However, do not let your guard down; the latter half of the route dramatically shifts in character, descending into a highly technical, sharp, and rocky environment that will thoroughly test your rig's capabilities.

Difficulty

Love Mesa Road firmly earns a Level 3 technical rating due to its exceptionally long, highly variable, and physically demanding conditions. In the early and middle sections, off-roaders must safely battle 6-to-8-inch-deep mud ruts and remarkably slick, lingering snow and ice patches that require a highly capable 4WD system. As the 20.1-mile journey progresses into its latter half, the difficulty spikes significantly. Drivers must meticulously navigate intensely steep, heavily degraded declines littered with loose, shifting rock. Successfully conquering these final technical sections absolutely demands high ground clearance to safely clear jagged 12-to-18-inch rock obstacles, robust all-terrain tires, and precise, careful driving to avoid severe undercarriage damage on the sharp, unforgiving terrain.
