Trail Overview

Leon Lake Jeep trail goes between Cedaredge and Vega Reservoir. A scenic trip, although a bit rocky and bumpy through the center portion. Leon Lake is a beautiful lake at a little over 10,000' elevation. We did this tail in August without any mud problems, but I would not suggest it if the ground is wet. A few mud holes could be questionable. The entire trip from Highway 65 on the south to Road 330 on the north is 30 miles. It took us 5-6 hours, including a few geocaches, airing down/up, lunch, and a flat tire. Both ends of the trail have large stands of aspen, while the center has extensive areas with open parks and nice views. One of the beaver dams along Marcott Creek, on the southern half of the trail. Colby Horse Park Reservoir is a short distance north of Leon Lake.

Started off at the south trailhead above Cedaredge. Light snow to start with. No problems. I was on a Polaris Sportsman 450 H.O. and my buddy was on a Yamha Grizzly 700. There was a downed tree that he winched off the trail and we kept going up. Snow just kept getting deeper and I was getting high-centered about 4.5 miles in. His Yamaha even had more aggressive tread than my tires and he was starting to have issues too. Turned back to the trailhead and jammed up the logging road to 121 went a few miles up then turned back to go home. 23.2 miles total that day. Any later than now and its gonna be snowmobile season

4-5 feet deep mudhole obstructing the trail from all approach angles.

It's mostly dry. There's a spot just near the private property gates that, despite the rest of the trail being largely dry, still has big, deep-looking puddles. The bypass for that is a little tricky, but you're not likely to get stuck. The drop into the bypass and the puddles is pretty sharp, so if it's sticky mud, it would be hard to get much momentum to get through. When this trail is wet, I'd stay away from it. The south part of the trail is really slow going.

Tree behind the dam is cut, but the roots of the tree still cover half the trail. Quads and SxS can get through mid-size vehicles might, full size vehicles cannot. Fishing was good.

Came in Via Grand Mesa 125 then 127 to Leon. Attempted to continue on 127 to Vega but a large tree had fallen over the road at the dam. Good fly fishing many nice cut throat and several large brook, all caught and released

Started from 330 (Vega Stare Park). All water crossings were passable but running fast. Made it to Leon Lake with the snow blocking the road and impassable just pass that. Several very deep, muddy ruts that were challenging. Stock Gladiator needed assistance twice to recover. Extremely wet and marshy above 10k. Beautiful, lush and green - but at least another month to be completely open from 330 to 65.

couple water crossings before you get to Marcot Reservoir that were around 18” and 15” deep but easily passable in our rig. We went as far as Y & S reservoir but chose to camp at Marcot. The trail was usable from everything that we saw. Good camping at the lake and we had it all to ourselves. Lots of OHV on the trail below the lakes though. Overall, it’s not too busy, and if you’re looking for a beautiful view, this trail has a lot of them.

The leg from 330 to Vega is blue in this app. Maybe for a Corvette, dodging potholes. It’s a paved road! This trail needs to be broken into better segments. 330 to Vega (or Vega to 330) isn’t even a trail.

Came from Vega and it was largely easy to pass until the two private property gates. Got muddy pretty quick after the second. Might still be passable, but it was too sloppy for my taste after the recent rain. I turned back around.
