Trail Overview
This short out-and-back route is typical of many of the scenic trails found throughout the region, offering a peaceful ride through a beautiful high-country landscape. The road winds through tall pine and aspen forests, with abundant white wildflowers adding color to the surroundings during the summer season when the route is open. Along the way, the forest gives way to several open meadows and areas affected by previous wildfires, creating a changing landscape and occasional opportunities for expansive views. As you continue toward the end of the route, keep an eye out for the impressive rock formations rising high along the surrounding mountain slopes, adding a dramatic backdrop to the journey. There is little at the end of the road itself, but a few suitable areas offer opportunities for dispersed camping, making this a worthwhile destination for those looking to spend a quiet night in the mountains.
Difficulty
This is a fairly easy trail suitable for most vehicles with moderate ground clearance. There are a few shallow ruts and occasional mud holes along the route that require some attention, but nothing particularly challenging in dry conditions.
History
North Park is a high, isolated mountain basin surrounded by the Park Range, Never Summer Mountains, and Medicine Bow Mountains, with landmarks such as Red Hill Mountain and Little Haystack Mountain rising above the surrounding country. For generations, Indigenous peoples used North Park as a seasonal hunting ground, followed by trappers, prospectors, and ranchers who began settling the area in the 1870s. Ranching and hay production became the foundation of the local economy, while mining, logging, and transportation later shaped the region. Walden was established as the area’s central community in the late 1800s, and the remote landscape has retained much of its historic character.
