Difficulty

Difficult. One of the most difficult in the state, offering nonstop challenges. Minimum 33-inch tires, differential lockers and winch. Bring spare parts and don't go alone.

History

Holy Cross City once had a population of about 300 people, a school and a hotel. Look around and you should be able to count about 17 foundations along with a dwindling number of cabins. The town survived only a few short years during the 1880s.

Group of 6 rigs. Drizzle on and off all day making it quite slick on the main obstacles. Only encountered two other groups on the trail. Most obstacles and the trail were in decent shape. No deep holes at the base of most obstacles.

I only saw a handful of people on the trail, but the road coming in from the highway was full of campers. Watch out for the usual suspects (ATVs and SxS) flying up and down the road, especially on blind corners. I wouldn't recommend trying this on a bike unless you're a very experienced trail rider, and if you do, be prepared for a full body workout, and expect that you and your bike are going to pick up some new scrapes.

Came to check out this trail and after pulling out the guy in the sedan who got stuck going up to read the sign, we decided to give it a try. We knew we might have to turn around. Made it about half way up. Had to winch over a section that I got hung up on. After that it was too muddy to go much further. If I was with other Jeeps and had started earlier in the day, I would have kept going but going alone is not recommended (for good reason)

Trail was fairly dry with some small mud puddles and muddy spots. This trail lives up to its rating! Some trail guides state that 33” tires and 2” lift minimum but we had trouble with 35”, 2” and experienced driver. Glad we had a good spotter! Saw one SxS on their way down but not sure how far they got up the trail. Fall colors were in full swing.
