Trail Overview

Grandma's Ride Road is a highly scenic, moderately technical 2.5-mile trail that embarks directly adjacent to a large, convenient staging area. Averaging a cautious 5.6 mph over roughly 27 minutes, the drive offers incredible, expansive 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding, dramatic desert landscape as it meanders alongside securely fenced private property. It is crucial that explorers strictly follow the mapped route to ensure they remain on legal public access. Early on the trail, drivers should remain highly vigilant, as numerous, fast-paced motorcycle-only single tracks frequently crisscross the main route. As the journey progresses, the terrain throws several engaging obstacles at vehicles, including noticeably steep, loose climbs, matching descents, jagged rocky ledges, and tricky off-camber sections that demand at least 6 to 8 inches of ground clearance and deliberate, careful driving. Approximately midway through, a beautiful, secluded dispersed campsite offers an excellent spot to pause and soak in the massive views. The undisputed crux of the trail is a severe, highly intimidating off-camber obstacle featuring a massive, 24-inch sudden drop on the driver's side. This intense section requires a capable 4WD vehicle, significant ground clearance, and extremely precise tire placement to safely conquer without incident. Overall, the route is a highly enjoyable, visually stunning drive punctuated by one major technical hurdle.

Difficulty

Grandma's Ride Road demands a Level 5 Difficult rating due to the presence of one specific, highly intense obstacle that dictates the vehicle requirements for the entire 2.5-mile route. While much of the trail features moderate, engaging challenges like steep, loose climbs and rocky ledges requiring a minimum of 6 to 8 inches of clearance, the true test is a severe off-camber section. This intimidating obstacle features a sudden, sheer 24-inch drop on the driver's side, placing vehicles at a precarious, highly compromised angle. Navigating this successfully and safely absolutely requires a dedicated 4WD system, substantial suspension articulation and ground clearance, and flawless, precise tire placement. Attempting this trail in a standard, low-clearance AWD vehicle will likely result in severe undercarriage or body damage.
