Trail Overview

This short mountain pass offers camping and an option to make it longer and more challenging by returning across Glacier Peak. To return to Denver, you'll go southeast from the pass on gravel roads to Jefferson.

Difficulty

Moderate. Very steep and chewed-up near the top, but not quite bad enough to be rated difficult yet. You'll need 4-wheel drive, low range gearing and high ground clearance. Novice drivers will find it challenging.

History

Georgia Pass was the most popular way to reach Breckenridge from the south in the early 1860s. Thousands of eager miners brought their wagons over the pass and down through the Swan River Valley. Eventually Boreas Pass and Hoosier Pass became the more popular routes, and Georgia Pass was abandoned. Dredge mining continues on the west end of Tiger Road, but much of the larger dredged area has now been reclaimed.

Rating this between a 3 and a 4, leaning towards 3. Got onto the pass south of Middle Swan Road and encountered ice where creeks cross the trail. Dirtbikes had to be careful and usually rode on the southwestern bank. Expect some burms, and some moderate rocks. A stock built-for-purpose off road vehicle will have no challenge with this trail provided the right lines are taken. Expect more slip with ice as the year wears on, and remember this closes in mid-November. There is a rewarding view at the top, and going down from there to 285 on Michigan Creek Road will be a welcome change for any beginner-to-intermediate off roaders.

Overrated as a 5. This is hardly a 3.5. It is rutted and steep on the Breck side but there is 0 pucker and no obstacles at all. I wouldnt take a rav4 up this but any truck with 4wd would have an easy day with great views. I would recommend starting from Breck as its just too easy from Jefferson side. Also I enjoyed taking American Gulch all the way back into Breck for some great views of the French Gulch, or you could go over to Jefferson and make a loop back to Breck taking nearby Boreas Pass.

Some left over snow in one or two spots, lots of flowing water in numerous places on the trail. Descended South to North at the start of the day and ascended in the evening. Easy trail, no traffic in the afternoon.

The trail leading up to the gate was pretty chill. There was some minor snow on the trail but really easy riding. Gate was closed to protect the trail during the spring runoff (at least that is what the sign said).
