Trail Overview

This through route travels through the historic Golden Horseshoe mining area, connecting with other roads in the extensive backcountry network northeast of Breckenridge. The surroundings consist primarily of dense pine, spruce, and fir forest mixed with stands of aspen, while occasional openings provide views across the surrounding forested mountainsides. The roadway passes through an area shaped by more than a century of mining activity, and old mine workings, cabins, mills, and other historic remains can be found throughout the surrounding Golden Horseshoe. The route generally remains below treeline, reaching elevations of roughly 10,800 feet as it winds along the mountainside. The official Forest Service summer motor-vehicle season for the Golden Horseshoe is May 21 through November 22, although lingering snow can affect accessibility early in the season.

Difficulty

The route has no major technical obstacles but includes shallow ruts, dips, minor erosion, and scattered loose and embedded rock. Moderate grades and occasional uneven sections require some attention but remain relatively easy under normal dry conditions.

History

The Breckenridge area was heavily shaped by the Colorado Gold Rush beginning in 1859, when gold discoveries brought prospectors into the Blue River and surrounding gulches. French Gulch, Georgia Gulch, the Swan River, and nearby mountains became important mining areas containing placer operations, hard-rock mines, settlements, and eventually large dredging operations. Several settlements once existed throughout this backcountry. Lincoln City developed in French Gulch, where placer claims and later hard-rock mines operated, while Parkville developed near Georgia Gulch and briefly served as the first county seat of Summit County. Hydraulic mining later buried the remains of Parkville beneath mining debris. Many of the roads traveled through the area today follow corridors originally used to reach mines, settlements, and other operations that supported Summit County's mining industry.
