Trail Overview
This route travels through a dense evergreen forest broken up by several lush grassy meadows and small openings between the trees. Much of the route has a rocky base, with sections of exposed dirt and scattered stone visible along the way. The surrounding forest becomes particularly interesting in places where mature trees have grown into curved and irregular shapes, giving portions of the route an almost fairy-tale-like appearance as it winds beneath the canopy. Moisture collects along portions of the route after rain, while the surrounding meadows and forest floor become especially green. Toward the end of the route, you will encounter a gate. Leave the gate exactly as you found it. If it was closed, close it behind you, and if it was open, leave it open.
Difficulty
Predominantly rocky terrain with scattered embedded and protruding rocks up to about 8 inches creates a moderately rough, uneven ride. Wet conditions can leave muddy and slick sections where water collects in the track, potentially reducing traction. The route has no major technical obstacles, steep ledges, or significant rock features. High-clearance vehicles are recommended due to the exposed rocks and uneven surface.
History
Haycamp Mesa has a long history of ranching, sheepherding, logging, and transportation. Historic stock driveways and early roads crossed the mesa, providing access between ranching areas around Dolores and the higher summer ranges of the San Juan Mountains. The Lost Canyon Stock Driveway served as the primary livestock route across Haycamp Mesa throughout much of the 20th century and was used predominantly by sheep operations. Hispanic and Basque sheepherders also left hundreds of historic carvings, known as arborglyphs, in the area's aspen trees. Historic surveys have documented stock trails, camps, roads, and other remnants associated with generations of livestock use. Logging and forest management also shaped portions of the mesa and contributed to the extensive network of roads that exists throughout the area today.
