Trail Overview
Deadman Lookout is an easy and accessible trail that runs double-wide for its entire length, making it suitable for all types of high-clearance vehicles and a comfortable ride compared to more rugged nearby routes. The road is free of obstacles, though drivers can expect sporadic washboard sections along the way. Campsites are scattered throughout the route, offering plenty of options for dispersed camping. The trail is a popular area, especially on weekends, thanks to its mellow nature and ease of access. Near the top, signs of logging activity can be seen, reflecting the working character of this part of the forest. There is access all the way to the lookout tower, which sits at the peak.
History
Historically, Deadman Lookout derives its name from the historic Deadman Fire Lookout Tower that stands near the summit. This tower was once an important station for spotting wildfires in the Roosevelt National Forest. While it is no longer staffed full-time, the lookout remains a point of interest and offers expansive views across the surrounding mountains and valleys. The area continues to be valued both for recreation and forest management, blending its logging history with outdoor use today.
