Trail Overview

Bunce School Road is a moderate trail that can run with high clearance 4x4 vehicles. Most of the trail is mild and can be done in 2wd with 32" tires. There are some sections, especially on the lollipop loop section, where both front and rear lockers were used and I scraped skid plates with 35" tires on a 6 gen Bronco. The lollipop loop is definitely the most exciting portion of the trail and a spotter is handy, especially on a couple of the steep ledge declines heading downhill. It's a good place to practice driving with 3 wheels on the ground. There is a lot of water runoff this year in early June and there were a few water crossings that came up to the bottom of the doors. There are several off-shoot trails that can add some additional mileage, as well as some off-map trails that lead into different sections of the mountain. The T-33 plane crash site is on this trail, but the snow prevented us from climbing up to see it. There are several off-shoot trails that have some fun rock obstacles to play on. You could spend hours exploring the additional off-shoots and scrambling over rock outcroppings. In addition, there are several places with excellent natural backstops if you want to bring out the firearms and have some fun with target practice. There are several excellent areas for dispersed camping along this route.

Difficulty

The main trail is relative mild with a few loose rock ledges. Most of the difficult lines have a bypass that can be handled by 2wd vehicles. The most difficult portion of this trail is the lollipop loop section that some people call the flat irons. This section requires a lifted vehicle with 35" tires. I used both lockers on this section as the ledges had a lot of loose rocks.

Trail was great. The parking/staging area where you used to be able to pull a trailer in is now all roped off so there is no where to turn around. Had to back trailer all the way down to get out which isn’t fun with the washout. Just a heads up for anyone going up with a trailer to avoid that.

Not a snooze-fest and will surprise you from the start. The pretty scenes will distract you and may bounce around some. Nice acclimation trail to take on the harder ones that are worthy of the time spent. Don’t go too fast thru some of the water crossings, some smaller rocks may be hiding, but be sure to go fast enough to get that war paint look to be proud of. The Mud wallows were at a minimum.

Trail has dried out quite a bit from the snow melt, only two mud pits and a shallow water crossing. We took it from Rt7 to the T33 trail. My 04 TJ with open diffs handled in very well, the lift was necessary for a lot of these features. Highly recommend airing down, lots of jagged rocks. had my K02's @ 18 psi and I was able to stay in 2wd for the majority of this trail.

Hard to believe snow on this trail just 3 days ago. No snow, barely any mud, almost normal perfect conditions today at Ironclads. 4x4, locker used in some spots. High clearance required on ironclads, not your mom’s Subaru type trail. Moderately technical.

Was able to get most of the way through the trail until near the end where we came across a water crossing with 3ft of snow on either side got two Jeeps stuck. We had to hike out and came across multiple spots with 3ft of snow and other large water crossings.

Trail was great. No issues until about 3.5 miles in, hit some really deep snow ~2.5 feet. Got stuck and had to be pulled out by the other jeep in my party. Winch necessary to get through to the Camp D side or really big tires (I have 33s).

Very easy at the beginning but snow gets deeper in the middle. The road to t33 and middle st vrain were closed off. Got through most of iron clads before we turned around
