Trail Overview

BLM Route 2764 is an unmaintained, hard-packed dirt road with numerous ruts. While many can be straddled or driven over, some are very deep and unavoidable. The route also includes one steeper section with loose gravel. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended. The route lies entirely within the East Troublesome Fire burn scar. Although vegetation is slowly recovering, the landscape remains dominated by standing dead trees, with pockets of young aspen beginning to reclaim the area. Fallen trees are common, so there is a higher likelihood of encountering obstructions along the road. The eastern portion of the route offers scenic views of the surrounding landscape. The final quarter mile of BLM Route 2764 becomes heavily overgrown, and vehicles may pick up pinstripes from encroaching brush. Use caution when parking, as hot exhaust components can ignite dry vegetation. The route ends at the boundary of private property, with no through access.

Difficulty

While this route begins relatively easily with a simple dirt surface and minor 2-to-3-inch rocks, the overall difficulty significantly increases to a level 3 about halfway through the journey. At this transition point, drivers must carefully and skillfully navigate much deeper 10-to-12-inch dirt ruts that require greater ground clearance and precise tire placement. Furthermore, the second half of the route's descent features multiple tight, demanding switchbacks winding down the steep mountainside. Because of these distinct, uneven hazards and sharp turns, the trail is decidedly unsuitable for tow-behind campers or long trailers. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended to safely traverse the deeper ruts and comfortably enjoy this remarkably scenic mountain drive.
