Trail Overview

This outstanding BLM backcountry route is widely regarded as one of the two premier trails in the area, offering a memorable combination of challenging terrain, expansive views, and remote wilderness scenery. The trail begins with a steady climb before making a sharp right turn and continuing along a series of rolling ridges, gaining elevation through a succession of climbs that lead to increasingly spectacular viewpoints. The route eventually ends at a scenic camping area overlooking the Colorado River Valley, providing a rewarding destination for those making the journey. Wildlife sightings are common, particularly elk, and portions of the fencing along the route were originally installed to help manage their movement through the area. While the trail is not highly technical in dry conditions, it features numerous steep climbs and descents covered in loose rock, making 4WD essential and airing down your tires strongly recommended. Drivers should also be prepared for deep ruts, off-camber sections, and narrow shelf roads that require careful vehicle placement and attentive driving throughout the route.

Difficulty

While this trail is not exceptionally difficult in dry conditions, it does require a capable 4WD vehicle, some off-road driving experience, and the ability to air down your tires for improved traction and ride quality. Along the route, you’ll notice the remnants of vehicles that have gone over the edge, serving as a reminder to stay focused and drive within your limits. Deep ruts, narrow shelf roads, and a few off-camber sections demand careful tire placement and attention, but none of these obstacles should present a problem for a skilled driver in a properly equipped vehicle. Keep in mind that this assessment assumes dry conditions; when wet, the combination of steep grades, loose surfaces, and exposed terrain can make the trail extremely difficult or even impassable.
