Trail Overview

Branching directly off BLM V 3/10, BLM 282 is an exceptionally rugged, slow-going 7.5-mile gauntlet that demands absolute focus. The challenge begins immediately with a steep incline and an intimidating 3-foot drop-off that you must carefully descend--and eventually climb back up on your return. By the 1-mile mark, the track narrows considerably, forcing vehicles into 15-degree off-camber angles against thick brush; expect inevitable trail rash and pinstriping along your side panels. Drivers must carefully monitor their tire placement here, as the edges of the trail are severely washed out and prone to cave-ins. At 1.9 miles, the route demands a very tight squeeze around large boulders, immediately followed by a rough crossing through a dry riverbed littered with 6-to-12-inch loose rocks. CRITICAL NAVIGATION WARNING at Mile 2.4: You will encounter a distinct "Y" intersection; you must take the left fork. The straight path is a dead-end trap featuring a massive 10-to-15-foot missing section of road that will swallow any vehicle. Throughout the journey, expect tight, steep switchbacks that require multi-point turns, and keep a constant watch for intersecting dirt bike trails. There are no camping opportunities along the brutal transit, but those who conquer the trail are rewarded at the terminus with a spectacular, flat camp spot capable of fitting 6 to 8 vehicles, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Difficulty

BLM 282 is a quintessential Level 6 trail that will aggressively test both driver and machine. It takes roughly 4.5 hours to cover just 7.5 miles, indicating a relentless, creeping pace. Drivers will face 18-to-22-inch ruts, severe 3-foot ledges, and off-camber sections exceeding 20 degrees while navigating over boulders. Many massive, 25-inch rocks are hidden on the approach or departure sides of hills, posing a severe threat to vehicle undercarriages. This trail absolutely requires a high-clearance 4x4 equipped with a minimum of 33-inch all-terrain/mud-terrain tires (due to extremely sharp, puncture-prone rocks), a rear locker, and heavy-duty rock sliders to prevent catastrophic body damage. DO NOT GO SOLO. Traveling with a group and utilizing a spotter outside the vehicle is mandatory to ensure safe tire placement. Furthermore, a strict weather ban is in effect: absolutely do not attempt this route if rain is present or forecasted, as the resulting mud makes the severe obstacles entirely impassable.
