Trail Overview

The BLM 179 trail offers a highly engaging and dynamic drive through a sprawling, heavily recreated desert landscape. The adventure kicks off directly from the paved section of 18 Road, opening into a wide, sandy parking area that comfortably accommodates 10 to 20 vehicles. This staging lot serves as a highly popular starting point for dirt bikes and side-by-sides gearing up to explore the adjacent obstacle courses. While the main route itself sees slightly less direct off-road vehicle traffic, it is surrounded by hundreds of intersecting play trails, meaning you must stay constantly vigilant for fast-moving crossing riders. As you progress, the trail closely traces a long wire fence line, leading you deeper into the striking desert toward the beautifully rugged Book Cliffs looming on the horizon. Right around the 0.4-mile mark, the terrain distinctly shifts from a relatively flat path into a much more playful series of rolling hills, undulating whoops, and noticeably steeper climbs and descents.

Difficulty

Earning a level 3 difficulty rating, the surface of this route is dominated by exceptionally soft sand, loose dirt, and minor washouts that will actively test your traction. You will encounter significantly deeper, rain-carved ruts reaching 12 to 14 inches, along with prominent, steep sandy hill climbs clearly visible in the provided photos. Because of the demanding approach and departure angles, shifting soil composition, and deep trenches, engaging all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is highly recommended to maintain a safe, controlled forward momentum. Vehicles with good ground clearance will thrive in these conditions, while trailers and exceptionally long-wheelbase rigs should absolutely avoid this specific route.
