BLM 129

Trail Overview

Originating from Mitchell Road, BLM 129 is a highly scenic, narrow dirt route that immerses explorers in sweeping, unobstructed 360-degree views of the surrounding desert landscape and distant canyon walls. While the trail begins gently, the middle section is completely washed out, presenting a technical challenge with deep, soft sand and severe erosion ruts. Along the first half, you will find several expansive clearings perfectly suited for large group camping, comfortably accommodating up to 10 vehicles. At the 2.5-mile mark, the path narrows drastically. Expect inevitable pinstriping from overgrown desert shrubs, and be aware of a prominently leaning tree that severely limits vertical clearance; tall trucks and large Sprinter vans should absolutely avoid this section. The route concludes with a steep, 8-foot hill climb obstacle before terminating at a spectacular, secluded campsite tucked directly against the canyon rim, offering enough leveled ground for a maximum of three vehicles. As a multi-use area, always remain alert for crossing dirt bikes and horseback riders throughout your journey.

BLM 129 securely earns a Level 4 Moderate rating due to its unmaintained, rutted dirt sections and soft, power-robbing sand. Navigating the washed-out middle section requires at least 12 inches of ground clearance to clear 18-inch erosion ruts while managing 20-degree off-camber angles. 4WD is mandatory, and utilizing a center locker is highly recommended to maintain traction through the softest zones. Additionally, the trail features a short, steep 8-foot grade near the terminus that aligns directly with Rating 4 parameters. A strict severe weather warning applies to this entire zone: absolutely do not attempt this trail if rain is present or forecasted. When wet, the horrendous desert dirt transforms into an impassable mire guaranteed to strand even the most capable off-road rigs.
