Trail Overview

Birdseye Gulch is a side trip of Mosquito Pass with a reputation for a section of unruly mud bogs. The bogs used to be impassable, but recent repairs by the local 4WD community have made them driveable, but still very challenging. Wave to the tourist train that comes through occasionally. There is a parking area at the north end off of Highway 91, which is where most unlicensed vehicles start.

Difficulty

Difficult. The road is steep and very rocky in spots due to erosion. Although we cannot recommend this trail for stock SUVs, more aggressive models with skilled drivers can do it.

History

As you drive to start of trail from Leadville, you'll see signs on left for the 'Matchless Mine Tour.' It takes less than an hour, but is extremely informative. They tell the story of Baby Doe Tabor, who for many years lived a rich and famous life as the wife of millionaire Horace Tabor, founder of the Matchless Mine, which largely was responsible for the development of Leadville. The tour starts in Baby Doe's shack where she died penniless and alone on Mar. 7, 1935. The shack is the original, with her pictures still hanging on the walls.

Went from the summit of Misquito Pass down to the highway. Bronco with 35s. Overall, dry and rutted and muddy in some spots. Boulder fields were fun, but serious. The off-camber section was a bit washed out on the edge, and the vehicle was sliding a bit, with a slight pucker on my end at one point for sure. The trail was tight, but clear and clean. It was fun, and I didn’t see a person on the trail. It would be tight in a full-size truck, with some tight turns around or up and over boulders that may cause tree contact.

I was driving my 2018 Raptor and my friend was driving her 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road. Both are little higher than stock. We went north to south starting at 91 heading towards Mosquito Pass. It had rained/snowed the night before so in the trees the trail was wet, but outside the trees it was covered in snow. The width of this trail made it particularly difficult for my Raptor, the Taco had it a little “easier”, clearance wise we were both okay. There’s a section that’s off camber leaning towards the driver’s side to a drop off. That was nerve racking for me because I was right on the edge and the trail was wet, so I had serious concerns about slipping, but you’re reading this so I made it lol. There is hardly anywhere to get by anyone coming in the opposite direction. There’s an open area where the train tracks are, but when you’re in the thick in of the trail, there isn’t any room to get by one another.

Trail conditions are good. Rocky and wet with a little muddy sections. Recommend at least skids. Lockers will help on uphill rocky sections, but not necessary. Completed in 91 Land Cruiser with 2" lift and 33s. No lockers used.

Leadville still has a lot of snow but it’s melting fast. I would say in about a month Mosquito Pass and the rest will be passable. Came from Salida and took I-70 east. Anything West of Georgetown is probably going to be the same until you head much further West. We will be back in a couple weeks!
