Trail Overview
Billings Canyon Road serves as an excellent, scenic connector for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes looking to link up the expansive Third Flats and Bangs Canyon trail systems. Spanning approximately 2.6 miles, this trail offers moderate elevation changes ranging from 5,618 feet to 6,175 feet, featuring about 666 feet of cumulative climbing when traveled from north to south. The route begins relatively easy with a few punchy climbs and descents over a mix of dirt and loose gravel, providing gorgeous high-desert views of the surrounding red rock country. As you proceed further south, the terrain shifts, displaying a variety of soil types and transitioning into a slightly more technical but still manageable path with a technical rating of 3.
While the route lacks severe obstacles, drivers should watch out for pokey rocks and embedded ledges that require careful tire placement to avoid punctures. The southern portion of the road leads to an intersection with the popular Tabequache Trail, terminating near the Bangs Canyon Trailhead. Accessing this underutilized route is easiest from the Bangs Canyon side, though parking is also available at the Third Flats Trailhead. Whether driving a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, piloting a SxS, or riding a motorcycle, Billings Canyon Road is a fantastic option to seamlessly string together longer offroad adventures in the Grand Junction area.
Difficulty
The trail lacks any significant technical features, however, there are some sections with pokey rocks that require some attention.
