Trail Overview
16 Road, also known as Coal Gulch, begins by following a wash, winding its way through the lower desert terrain before climbing steadily to a ridge road. From there, the route transitions into a shelf road, where careful driving is needed through blind corners and exposed rock sections. The trail includes a series of steep hills that add to the challenge, though it remains manageable for drivers with moderate off-road experience. With its changing terrain, 16 Road offers a combination of open desert views and tighter canyon passages that keep the drive engaging.
Difficulty
This is an unmaintained trail with erosion, potential wash crossings, narrow shelf road sections with switchbacks and blind corners. There are also steep hills with loose rock and erosion sections. Caution is urged, especially on the shelf road sections.
History
Coal Gulch has long been part of the Grand Valley’s backcountry network, where washes and ridgelines served as natural routes for early ranchers and resource seekers. The road’s name reflects the coal seams that were historically present in the area, tied to mining and settlement efforts around the greater Grand Junction region. Today, the trail carries visitors into landscapes shaped by both geology and history, offering a glimpse of the rugged routes once relied upon for access and work in western Colorado.
